Building record 1306 - Waulkmill Farm

Please read our .

Summary

The present Waulkmill Farm is a stone house with attached farmbuilding of 18th or 19th century appearance standing alongside the River Dean. Immediately upstream is a substantial early 19th century weir built to run Ingersley Vale Mill . It is possible that this farm may occupy the site of a fulling mill shown on an early 17th century map in the Public Record Office as "Raph. Thorly's Walke Mill". Fulling is the cleaning of woollen cloth under water by beating it continuously. This was could be done by physically treading the cloth or by using a fulling mill where the wheel powered hammers carried out the job of removing dirt from cloth.

Full Description

The present Waulkmill Farm is a stone house and attached farm building of eighteenth or nineteenth century appearance standing alongside the River Dean. Immediately upstream is a substantial early nineteenth century weir (a listed building) built to run Ingersley Vale Mill (CHER 2612/1/2)(1). However, this farm may occupy the site and incorporate parts of a seventeenth century fulling mill shown on an early seventeenth map in the Public Record Office as Raph Thorly's Walke Mill (2).
