Full Description
Hollin Old Hall, Grimshaw Lane. Formerly hall, then farmhouse, now divided into two houses. Early C17 core, addition to rear and raising of roof mid C18 for Richard Broster. Further major addition c.1870 for Ascoli family, who remodelled the whole house. Coursed, squared buff sandstone, stone-slate roof, stone ridge and three stone chimneys. Two storeys over barrel vaulted cellar. In three-bay front all windows are chamfered stone mullions, two have C17 rubble hood moulds. Both gables have windows under rubble hood moulds. Remainder of house in Jacobean style with stone-coped gables and a mixture of mullioned and transomed, and mullioned windows. Interior of west half - c.1870. Interior of E half - room in right end bay has a massive inglenook fireplace with chamfered jambs and firebeam. Blocked gable entry beside it. Two chamfered ceiling beams with flat stops (1).
