Full Description

At the site of disused mines near White Barn Farm, flint flakes and blades were found in December 1904, in a blackish, mouldy sand from a rock edge overhanging the entrance to the mine, to the level of a boarded up shaft (1). Dated to the mesolithic (3) & (4).
According to (6), this is called a 'neolithic settlement' by Roeder & Graves (1905). Flint scatters were collected from the old ground surfaces along the northwest margin of the West Mine Opencast. Examples of some of these flints collected can be seen in Manchester Museum collections (6). Despite an exhaustive search nothing can be seen today, it is likely that the area suffered greatly during the cource of the back-filling of the open cast mine (6).
