Summary

Macclesfield Stocks and Whipping Post were situated near the old Town Hall steps. The stocks were repaired and replaced in 1713 and 1774. Stocks were used as a form of punishment in towns and villages from medieval time to the 19th century. A person would be placed in the stocks and fastened by their ankles and subject to public humiliation.

Full Description

Macclesfield Stocks and Whipping Post were situated near the old Town Hall steps. The stocks were repaired and replaced in 1713 and 1774. The cage appears to have been fixed somewhere near the market place, as there are records for items for roofing the cage (1).
