Full Description
The place name Eddisbury is first mentioned (campus vocat' Eddisbury) in 1467. The name may derive from 'Ead's stronghold' perhaps from an Old English personal name as in Ead and burh, as at Eddisbury in Delamere, but the first element could be the Old English personal name Eddi (1). There is terracing on the hill below and a bank and ditch along the line of the parish boundary (2). The place name may derive from the Old English edisc, a park or enclosed pasture for cattle (3). A small univallate hilltop enclosure which has not yet been dated. Could be the site of Aethelflaed's burh, established in 914 (4).
