Monument record 1642/1 - Poynton Mill

Summary

A house now occupies the site of the former watermill at Poynton which may have been reconstructed from the original mill buildings. The mill is mentioned in documentary sources from 1500. The location of the mill is shown in Estate Survey of 1770. The water supply came from a mill pool which was dammed near Barlow Fold on Poynton Brook with its confluence with Norbury Brook. Records suggest the mill was no longer operational by the early 19th century when Norbury Mill expanded. An evaluation on the route of the A523 Poynton Bypass in 1993 identified a broad, dry channel which may be the remains of the mill headrace.

Location of Poynton Mill shown in Estate Survey of 1770. Located on Norbury Brook just before it passes under the Hazel Grove-Woodford road on a site now occupied by Tanglewood Cottage, which may have been reconstructed from the original mill buildings. Water supply came from a mill pool which was dammed near Barlow Fold on Poynton Brook with its confluence with Norbury Brook. Miller may have lived at Barlow Fold. Course of mill leat can be deduced from the 1770 survey. No trace of original mill buildings. Records suggest mill ceased working in the 1820s or 30s when Norbury Mill expanded. Documentary references to Poynton Mill from 1500.
