Full Description
Poynton Chapel. First mentioned in 1312. Dedicated to the Virgin Mary & dependent on the parish church of Prestbury. Held by the Abbot of Chester, who was supposed to provide a chaplain. The original chapel stood near Poynton Hall and appears to have served for the three townships of Poynton, Worth & Woodford. It was repaired & a new chancel built in 1741 when some disputes arose as to the liability of the various townships towards the repairs. In 1787 the old chapel was pulled down & a new one erected on the old site at the expense of Sir George Warren. It was consecrated in 1789. This too was pulled down in 1858 & a new church built half a mile from the site and nearer to the village of Poynton (1).
