Summary

Poynton Chapel was first mentioned in 1312. It was dedicated to the Virgin Mary and dependent on the parish church of Prestbury. The original chapel stood near Poynton Hall and appears to have served for the three townships of Poynton, Worth and Woodford. It was repaired and a new chancel built in 1741 when some disputes arose as to the liability of the various townships towards the repairs. In 1787 the old chapel was pulled down and a new one erected on the old site at the expense of Sir George Warren. It was consecrated in 1789. This too was pulled down in 1858 and a new church built half a mile from the site and nearer to the village of Poynton.
