Full Description
Disley iron furnace was situated on land of the Jodrell family, on the boundary of Yeardsley Whaley. It was first noticed in the 1690s when small quantities of 'Jodrell pig' were being received at the south Yorkshire forges, but in 1702, some of its produce found its way as far as Carburton forge in Nottinghamshire. Disley furnace is not mentioned in any of the lists of ironworks of the 18th century (1). The Jodrell fmily owned the narrow strip of land between Peak Forest canal and the road on both sides of the county boundary from just west of Newtown (Cheshire) SJ 993846 to Furness Vale (Derbyshire) SK 008835 (2). No trace of the iron furnace was found in Newtown (3).
