Summary

A grade II* listed sixteenth or seventeenth century Chapel and Chaplain's House. The Chapel was endowed by the de Sutton family in 1524 and continued as a Catholic Chapel under the Davenport and Bellasis families until 1716 when it was converted to Anglican use by Thomas, Earl Falconberg of Newborough. It ceased to operate as a Chapel in 1760 but was restored to its original use as a Catholic Chapel in the 1950s.

Full Description

A sixteenth or seventeenth century Chapel and Chaplain's House. Up to two storeys constructed of coursed rubble with stone-slate roof. The Chapel was endowed by the de Sutton family in 1524 and continued as a Catholic Chapel under the Davenport and Bellasis families until 1716 when it was converted to Anglican use by Thomas, Earl Falconberg of Newborough. It ceased to operate as a Chapel in 1760 but was restored to its original use as a Catholic Chapel in the 1950s. Full architectural description (1). A small chapel attached to the hall. Extended in the seventeenth century and in use until c.1760 but is now turned into an outhouse (2). A small stone chapel with the chaplian’s house attached, and a lych gate and burial ground, all most likely sixteenth century. The chapel was used for Catholic worship in the seventeenth century. It later fell into disuse, but was restored in 1950 (4).
