Full Description

Sundial in St Bartholomew's Churchyard, Church Street. Late C17. Ashlar buff sandstone. Two circular stone steps support an octagonal baluster with a bulbous base. Projecting band below projecting heavy cap which holds a circular copper sundial plate, the original gnomon is missing (1). The shaft of the sundial surmounts what is probably the base of an old churchyard cross (2).

The site was visited in 1999 by C Crowe, who concluded that the base was not that of an earlier cross but that it was the original 17th century sundial base. Also, that it was finely cut sandstone, the first step measuring 120 cm in diameter (in one piece), the second step measuring 78 cm (in two pieces) both with a lip on the top edge which might have been intended as a drip moulding. He concluded that it was not a monument of national inportance (4).
