Full Description
Site of Norcliffe Hall. From an early period there appears to have been a so-called manor in Pownall Fee, called Norcliffe. In 1255 & 1270 there is reference to the 'vill of Northclyve'. The manor is mentioned in 1276. It appears originally to have formed part of the large possessions of the Fittons of Bolyn and to have been granted c.1255 to Richard de Orreby of Gawsworth. The manor then passed to the Fittons of Gawswoth, but was sold before 1600. The manor house stood on the high ground on the right bank of the River Dean, c.0.5 mile from Twinney Bridge. The foundations of the building were uncovered during land drainage pre 1877 (1). No trace of manor house (2).
