Summary

Grade II listed barn. Built in the 16th century with 17th century alterations and early 19th century brickwork. There are also some late 19th and 20th century alterations. It is timber framed with brick end walls and infill and a stone slate roof. Inside are two full cruck frames on padstones. The side walls are still mainly of small timber frames and each side has the lintel of the original cart entrance. This is the site of a monastic grange and the barn may have been built when the farm was bought by a yeoman after the dissolution around 1540. Wood was in plentiful supply as a building material in Britain until the 17th century. It was therefore the most practical material for house building. Timber framed buildings consist of a wooden framework (usually oak) that was infilled to created solid walls. Infill material used included wattle and daub, lath and plaster, brick and weather board. Brick nogging, (brick infill) was often used in the 17th and 18th centuries to replace earlier wattle and daub or lath and plaster infill as it was longer lasting. Cruck frames are two curved timbers that are cut from the same tree are used to support a roof from floor to apex.

Timber framed with brick end walls and infill. Stone slate roof. Rectangular plan of three bay cruck framed corn barn with added outshuts. Interior: Two full cruck frames on padstones have tie beams, collars and yokes. Short spurs to junction of wall plate and principal rafter. Side walls still mainly of small timber frames and each side has lintel of original cart entrance. This is the site of a monastic grange and the barn may have been built when the farm was bought by a yeoman after the dissolution c.1540. Full architectural description (1).
