Summary

Grade II listed farmhouse built in the mid 17th century with late 17th, mid 18th and 20th century additions and alterations. It is timber framed with brick infill and a slate roof. It is H-shaped in plan. There is a slight jetty to the first floor (A jetty is an overhanging upper storey) Wood was in plentiful supply as a building material in Britain until the 17th century. It was therefore the most practical material for house building. Timber framed buildings consist of a wooden framework (usually oak) that was infilled to created solid walls. Infill material used included wattle and daub, lath and plaster, brick and weather board. Brick nogging, (brick infill) was often used in the 17th and 18th centuries to replace earlier wattle and daub or lath and plaster infill as it was longer lasting.

Full Description

Oak Farm, Oak Lane. Farmhouse, mid 17th century with late 17th century and mid 18th and 20th century additions and alterations. Timber frame with brick infill and slate roof. H-shaped plan. The north downstroke being the original one cell block, with a later, mid 17th century two cell addition forming the central line. The south downstroke is of mid 18th century date. North side: stone plinth, brick to ground floor with corner posts. Slight jetty to first floor with ovolo-moulded bressumer and 5 x2 cells of small framing with angle braces. The late 17th century range was refaced in the early 19th century. Interior: chamfered ceiling beams to ground floor (1).
