Summary

Mere Mill was a three storey brick built watermill for the grinding of corn for flour. The mill had a kiln for the drying of the grain prior to milling and an unusually shaped mill pond which made the most of the site's topography. The mill pond has been filled in and it is uncertain if any of the buildings survive.

Mere Mill. A 3-storey brick mill with fine roof trusses. The leat was taken off the overflow brook from The Mere, but is now dry and the pool is filled in. The wheel was removed and a turbine installed c.1920. There is a complete drying kiln and floor. An adjoining building known as the Old Mill, collapsed a few years ago & has been largely rebuilt. The existing building has a date on the door lintel of 1796.

The mill pond is arranged in a curious way. The dam blocks Rotherne Brook (flowing north-east) creating a small pond c.50m x 25m. This in turn feeds a long linear pond to the immediate north-east which lies along the 50m contour line. This pond is where the mill race would be expected.

The mill is depicted on this map.
