Monument record 9/2 - Burials at Burton Point

Please read our .

Summary

A number of skeletons laid east-west were found at Burton Point when a causeway was being repaired in 1878. An entry in the Burton parish register, dated 1637, may account for the interment; it states that 41 people were drowned. It is also possible that they might be of early Christian date, there being no later church nearby.

The skeletons were found in repairing the causeway which runs from Burton Point to Connah's Quay & which was damaged by storm in Dec. 1878. The place where they were found was an extensive platform & they were from 1-2m below the surface. Nothing was found with the skeletons.

<3> Beazley, F C, 1908, Notes on the Parish of Burton in Wirral: Cheshire, p.22 (Book). SCH3173.

Local tradition says they were at least 50 or 60 & that they were coffined. An entry in the Burton parish register dated 1637 may account for the interment. It states that 41 people were drowned

<4> Ordnance Survey, 1870-1982, Ordnance Survey Archaeological Record Card, SJ37SW1 (Index). SCH2487.

No field evidence found.

<5> Bu'lock, J D, 1972, Pre-Conquest Cheshire 383 - 1066, p.21 (Monograph). SCH2685.

They might be of early Christian date, there being no later church nearby.

<6> David Randall, 1984, The Search for Old Wirral, p.116 (Monograph). SCH3860.
