Full Description

One of the principal granges of Stanlow later Whalley Abbey, on the best site in the township. Artificial terrace, 200yds in length, still existing in 1819. Called Grange-Cow-Worth, the same as Cowhouse. Nearly square, 6 acres in size, surrounded by a water-filled moat. Traces of extensive buildings occasionally laid bare, and large pavement removed for road building (1).

In 1965 SE arm of the moat was still visible and excavations in 1966/7, showed several building phases but these were hard to assign to the medieval or post- medieval periods. Site built over and levelled by 1972 (2).
