Full Description

Pair of vertical stones embedded into the ground, grooved on the inner faces to receive timber stocks. No timberwork survives. Later sandstone rubble wall behind. Stocks adjacent to Ince Manor House (1).

Stocks reset on broad pavement adjacent to Ince Manor House wall since 1980s. Two red sandstone piers measuring 0.85m high by 0.52m wide by 0.28m thick hold a replacement split oak plank, with two footholds, in slots measuring 0.39m long by 8cm wide. The oak plank measures 1.12m long by 0.25m deep by 0.15m thick. Chain and lock attachments are affixed to the top board on the north inner side and similar chain attachment on the south side facing the road. Both piers are worn and chipped and scraped. The base of the south pier has been recently repaired by the addition of a 16cm deep stone. Despite the recent damage to the south pier and the anticipated natural erosion of sandstones, the risk assessment is considered to be low (3 & 4).
