Summary

Documentary sources refer to the discovery of a Roman centurial stone and spearhead to the rear of Eastgate Street in 1888. Although substantial foundations were also noted they were not examined in any detail. Thought to be part of a centurion's house. Centurial stones were markers used to denote the activity of a particular century within the fortress and could be used to mark barracks, structures or defences built and/or maintained by that century.

Full Description

Evidence of substantial foundations of a probable Roman date were noted during construction to the rear of No 25 Eastgate Street (then the premises of Messrs Lamont & Son) in 1888. Among the foundations a centurial stone was recovered inscribed with the Century of the Third Cohort Terentius Romanus. Although structural evidence was noted it was not recorded in any detail however. (1)

Centurial stones were markers used to denote the activity of a particular century within the fortress and could be used to mark barracks, structures or defences built and/or maintained by that century.
