Monument record 63/0/3 - The Rope Walk, Parkgate
Please read our guidance about the use of Cheshire Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
The Rope Walk, a public footpath, and Rope Walk Field in Parkgate, indicate a site of rope-making from 18th century onwards.
Rope making often took place outdoors where there was an area long enough for ropemakers to walk up and down while twisting fibres into a continuous length of rope. Sites like this date from the 18th century when the use of sailing ships (who used the rope) was at its height. The industrial revolution put an end to the traditional roperies by mechanising the process.
