Summary

Scheduled Monument of a rectangular platform surrounded by a waterlogged moat. The present New Manor farmhouse is situated at the centre of the island with lawns, garden and a cobbled drive leading from a bridge across the eastern arm. A second bridge also crosses the western arm. The original New Manor manorhouse was built for John Dutton in 1526. The building foundations of this house lie below the lawns and gardens. The present manorhouse was rebuilt at some unspecified date.

Full Description

A well-preserved water-filled moat. The scarp averages 1.3m high and there is an intermittent retaining wall up to 0.3m high. Present house appears modern (1). An island measuring c67m x 52m is surrounded by a waterlogged moat which averages 8m wide by 1.3m deep but which widens at all corners except the NW. New Manor farmhouse is situated at the centre of the island with lawns, garden and a cobbled drive leading from a bridge across the E arm. A second bridge crosses the W arm. A waterlogged well is situated just to the S of the house. An intermittent retaining wall up to 0.3m high lines much of the island. Building foundations lie below the lawns & gardens. New Manor manorhouse was built for John Dutton in 1526. The Dutton family held the land around from the time of King John until 1705. The manorhouse was rebuilt at some unspecified date.(2)
