Summary

Excavations carried out in 1990 on the site of Daresbury Parsonage, Lewis Carroll's birthplace. They revealed robber-trenches allowing the exact plan to be recovered but no floor levels had survived. The house was built of red brick and the best preserved feature was a brick-lined well over 4m deep. Carroll was born on 27 Jan 1832 when his father was vicar of Daresbury. The parsonage was built in 1819-20 by Thomas Haddock but burnt down 1883. The site is now under farmland.

Full Description

Excavations carried out during 1990 on site of Daresbury Parsonage, Lewis Carroll's birthplace, funded by CCC, Birthplace Trust & NNC Ltd. Carroll born 27 Jan 1832 when father was vicar of Daresbury. Parsonage built 1819-20 by Thomas Haddock but burnt down 1883. Site now under farmland. Excavations revealed robber-trenches allowing exact plan to be recovered but no floor levels survived. House was built of red brick. 2 backfilled cellars were identified by geophysical survey (& excavation). Best preserved feature was brick-lined well over 4m deep. Core samples revealed layer of charcoal but no pollen survived. Site backfilled (1).
