Full Description
Archaeological investigations carried out on the east side of the present Goldsmith House (formerly the Assay Office) between 1968 and 1971 encountered the remains of a north-south aligned Roman structure of the First Cohort, however, the results have not been published in detail. At Chester the area of the First Cohort is currently poorly understood; it appears to have consisted of at least 5 barracks of normal type and 5 single-range buildings. At least three trenches were excavated recording the northern, southern and central areas of the structure.
The evidence suggested a north-south aligned structure approximately 6.1m wide facing west with a veranda 2.9m wide on the western side. Although the veranda appears to have been originally open, the southern end was enclosed at some later stage. Two periods of timber construction were noted in addition to later stone foundations (1).
