Full Description

Halton Brow. Construction work on new estate produced Roman pottery. Subsequent excavation, where it was possible, revealed a flat bottomed V- shaped ditch, 4ft deep. Ditch proved on three sides of an apparently rectangular enclosure, best preserved on the north-west. Area enclosed c.1 acre. No structural evidence inside (1) and (2). Considered as Roman military site by Richmond (3). Excavations in 1967 by Manchester University revealed a single ditched enclosure, an irregular pentagon in shape, enclosing a larger area of c.3.1/2 acres. No rampart or internal features. Pot suggested occupation from during 2nd and 3rd centuries. Suggested site was agricultural in nature (3).
