Foote Gower describes an earthwork of a ditch and rampart, enclosing 40 acres in a parallelogram, with Halton Castle in one corner, implying a medieval re-use of earlier fortifications. Note states "the Roman remains at Halton and the military road to it from Dunham were investigated by Mr Stones c.1699 (1). This account should be compared with evidence for a Roman Camp at Halton Brow CSMR record 110 and the Halton Deer Park CSMR record 104/2.
