Summary

Excavations carried out here in advance of redevelopment. The site comprised a number of post-holes, some forming groups showing successive rebuilding of structures on two house platforms. Associated were pits, cess-pits, cobbled tracks and the site was divided by drainage ditches. Finds span the 13/14th centuries to the 17th century. Norton appears as a Domesday Manor and was granted to the Augusinian canons on moving from Runcorn to Norton in 1134. Maps of 1757 and 1844 show the shrinkage of the village to a single farm.

Full Description

Norton Shrunken Village. Excavations covering 1,900 sq.m were carried out in advance of redevelopment. The site comprised a number of post-holes, some forming groups showing successive rebuilding of structures on two house platforms. Associated were pits, cess-pits, cobbled tracks and the site was divided by drainage ditches. Finds span the C13/C14 to C17. Norton appears as a Domesday Manor and was granted to the Augusinian canons on moving from Runcorn to Norton in 1134. Maps of 1757 and 1844 show the shrinkage of the village to a single farm (1) and (2).
