Summary

In 1881, LNWR sunk an artesian well on the site of a spring near Ditton Station. This work produced a medieval jug (12/13th century), two 1st century AD Roman coins and a Samian sherd. The peaty earth produced quantities of bones, stag's horns and worked bog oak, which is considered to have been used as shoring for an ancient well.

Full Description

In 1881, LNWR sunk an artesian well on the site of a spring near Ditton Station. Stratigraphy: 5ft dark grey marsh silt, above 13ft of dark brown earth, then 16ft of peaty earth, lying on gravel. 12ft from surface medieval jug (C12/C13), at 14ft two C1 Roman coins and Samian sherd. Peaty earth produced quantities of bones, stag's horns and worked bog oak, considered as shoring for an ancient well (1).
