Full Description
In 1881, LNWR sunk an artesian well on the site of a spring near Ditton Station. Stratigraphy: 5ft dark grey marsh silt, above 13ft of dark brown earth, then 16ft of peaty earth, lying on gravel. 12ft from surface medieval jug (C12/C13), at 14ft two C1 Roman coins and Samian sherd. Peaty earth produced quantities of bones, stag's horns and worked bog oak, considered as shoring for an ancient well (1).
