Summary

Grade II listed remains of an 18th Century Mansion. A mansion was built in 1565 for Sir John Savage, to replace an earlier Clifton Hall. Rock Savage itself was replaced by a later building in the 18th century and by 1782 thiswas deserted and falling into ruin. Now only fragments of sandstone walling survive. A reference of 1851 refers to the remains of a large formal garden of Elizabethan date and records show that a gateway with side turrets existed in 1811.

Full Description

Rock Savage. A mansion begun in 1565 for Sir John Savage, built to replace an earlier Clifton Hall. Rock Savage itself was replaced by a later building in C18 and by 1782 was deserted and falling into ruin. Now only fragments of sandstone walling survive(1). A reference of 1851 refers to the remains of a large formal garden of Elizabethan date (2). Gateway with side turrets existed in 1811 (3).
