Summary

The remains of a moat at Wood Farm have been designated a Scheduled Monument. The moat was trapezoidal in shape and enclosed a building platform 90m square. Today one arm of the moat has buildings on top of it. The other ditches do survive but are very shallow. An associated fishpond also survives. The site has been identified as platform for manor house owned by the Griffin family during the reign of Henry VIII and later sold to Sir Henry Delves in 1666.

Full Description

Three arms of a trapezoidal moat survive with the present Wood Farm and buildings having obliterated the southern area. Ditches mutilated and up to 1.3m deep. Platform c.90m square. Assumed to be the manor house, owned by the Griffins in Henry VIII's reign and bought by Sir Henry Delves in 1666 (1). N, W & E sides of the moat ditch survive, but S side has been destroyed by building of a piggery. At SE corner is a fishpond. Site has been identified as platform for manor house owned by the Griffin family during reign of Henry VIII & later sold to Sir Henry Delves in 1666. SE corner of moat survives in scrub woodland on S side of road. To SE is a fishpond 25m x 20m with annexe on W side 25m x 10m. Moat platform is 97m x 90m, with ditch 12m wide & 1.5m deep. S ends of E & W arms of ditch are waterlogged. Pond is dry except in very wet weather (5).
