Building record 2603/1 - Nantwich Institution, the Barony

The oldest part of the Barony Hospital is the old Workhouse, built in 1780. Long front with 2 long wings receding. One bay pediment with 2 tiers of venetian windows under

The old Workhouse building erected 1780 and now surrounded by many other C19 and C20 buildings. Symmetrical front, 3 storeys, brick with tiled roof, hipped at ends. 7 casement windows, generally restored and without glazing bars. Slight central projection with pediment containing clock-face; central entrance to ground storey with glazed porch. Dentilled brick eaves; modern stacks. Interior much altered.

Another storey was added in 1835, when the Poor Law Act constituted it Nantwich Union Workhouse
