Summary

There is a spring in Spurstow. It appears in a field forming part of the rising ground behind the Peckforton Hills. There was formerly a considerable pit or hollow at the rise of the spring for bathing, but it has been neglected and is now bog. At one time, this water was in considerable repute for the cure of various disorders and was drunk as well as being used as a bath.

Full Description

There is a salinae spring in Spurstow. Placename Spa Well Field is recorded in the Tithe Award of 1840. Present placenames Spa Wood and Spa plantation (1). Spurstow Spa water is an abundant spring on the estate of Sir Thomas Mostyn. It appears in a field forming part of the rising ground behind the Peckforton Hills. The stratum out of which it comes is a red & white clay & has been penetrated into to a depth of c.9ft. There was formerly a considerable pit or hollow at the rise of the spring for bathing, but through neglect it was filled up & formed a sort of bog. About 60 or 80 years ago this water was in considerable repute for the cure of various disorders & was used both internally & as a bath. Until lately crutches & other memoranda of its cures were deposited in the farmhouse belonging to the estate (2) Well to the west of Bath House shown on 1st edition OS map (in area of 'issues' on current 1:10,000) (3).
