Summary

Grade I listed mansion built between 1777-90 by Samuel Wyatt for Sir Thomas Broughton. It was built to replace the old hall, then in ruins. The mansion is a large rectangular block with a double projecting staircase instead of a portico. Inside, the two principal rooms are the rectangular entrance hall and the circular saloon.

Full Description

Doddington Hall. Mansion built 1777-90 by Samuel Wyatt for Sir Thomas Broughton, replacing the ruinous Old Hall. Considered to be Wyatt's most successful country house with its restrained detailing. Full architectural description (1) & (2). Large rectangular block with a tall rusticated basement and one-&-a half storeys. Has double projecting staircase modelled on that at Kedleston Hall. Two principal rooms are the rectangular entrance hall and the circular saloon. House formerly let as a boarding school, Goudhurst College, but now empty (3).
