Full Description
A well preserved Celtic coin found with a metal detector on rough ploughland near Brindley. (1). Weight: 1.097g. Coin is a large denomination silver issue of E Midlands type commonly attributed to Corieltauvi {formerly known as Coritani}. Obv: vestigial boar, rev:horse. Uninscribed therefore pre c AD10. Die wear on obv makes attribution difficult but prob Allen Type G (or poss F) (D F Allen, Coins of the Coritani, 1963). Corieltauvian coinages cannot be precisely dated but prob late 1st C BC. Coin is well outside normal circulation area of Corieltauvian coinage in particular and Celtic coinage in general as Cornovii in Cheshire did not mint coins of their own. May have been used for trading (? salt) but no real evidence for this (3).
