Full Description
Bronze Age palstave found in 1990 with a metal detector (1). Palstave has shield pattern and is c.16cms long x c.6.5cms wide across the splayed blade. In very good condition, apart from damage to the haft end. Drawing and photograph (2). Group I shield pattern palstave. Northwards there is only 1 good parallel from Cartmell, Lancs. The examples from Manchester (Davey 36) and Delamere (Davey 39) are similar, but one has to go to the Marches and Shropshire for good parallels to the shape - Asterton Pralley Moor and Knockin Castle; Wem, Shropshire; Pentrevoelas/ Ereiviat Road, Denbs and Llanidloes, Montgom. The shape is that of the Llandrinio palstaves of Shropshire-Montgomeryshire, though these tend only to have a crude hollow or a rib below the stop. All in the later Acton Park development phase (3).
