The placename Stoke (Stok, Stoke and Stooke) is recorded in documentary sources dating from 1260 to 1513.
<2> Cheshire County Council, 1974, County Treasures Record, 7/AR.242, 1979 (Index). SCH1000.
These documentary references (see 1) have been taken to suggest that the parish contains the site of a deserted medieval village.
<3> Ormerod, G., 1882, The History of the County Palatine and City of Chester, Vol.III p.359-362 (Book). SCH1389.
No mention of the township in the Domesday Book. Documentary references from to the manor dating from the fourteenth century make reference to up to eighteen messuages, three watermills and the vill of Stoke.
