Full Description
Nantwich was fortified soon after October 1642 by Sir William Brereton for the Parliamentarians. Defences consisted of a ditch 6ft wide, 4ft deep, with timber revetted mud wall on each side. Town besieged in 1643 but Royalists defeated at Acton. The fortifications were probably removed after the Civil War and no trace now survives (1).
