Summary

The churchyard of St Boniface's Churchyard has distinctive playing card shape which suggests the presence of a roman fort though there are no finds known. The dedication to St Boniface, an 8th century missionary Bishop, indicates a possible church in saxon times and the Domesday Book also records a priest at Bunbury. The is also a late medieval gravestone in the churchyard made of two weathered slabs each carved with a Calvary cross.

Full Description

St Boniface's Churchyard is of a distinctive playing card shape with the present church at its north centre. This may suggest a Roman site though no finds are known (1). The dedication to St Boniface may indicate a late Saxon cult centre or even a church (2). The Domesday Book records a priest at Bunbury (3). There is a probable late medieval gravestone in the churchyard at SJ 5695 5805. Made of two weathered slabs each carved with a Calvary cross (4).
