Summary

Original site of Austerson Old Hall. A L-shaped timber framed building of two-storeys. It was dismantled in 1974 and and re-erected in Alvanley. All that remains at this site is a late 16th century timber framed barn.

Full Description

Austerson Old Hall. L-shaped timber framed building of two-storeys and attic, end walls rebuilt in modern brick. DOE on provisional list considered it C15 with C17 south wing (1). Mercer considers it all C17 (2). House dismantled in 1974 and moved and re-erected in Alvanley by James Brotherhood (see RN 897/1) (1). Remaining is a barn to south-east of site of hall, late C16. Timber framed, partly brick nogged, partly weather boarded. Five bays, single storey and loft. Stone plinth, close-studding with middle rail and passing braces. Interior has heavy posts carrying queen post trusses (3). A survey of the barn was carried out ahead of its being dismantled, moved, restored and re-erected (4).
