Summary

Scheduled Monument and a Grade II* listed remains of medieval wayside cross, comprising of fragment of shaft, socket stone and two post medieval steps. It stands at the junction of 4 lanes in the centre of Woodhey Green. Standing Crosses are usually of stone and date from the medieval period, mid 10th to mid 16th centuries AD. They served a variety of purposes from places of prayer and pilgrimage to sites of public proclamation. At one time there were over 12,000 of these crosses throughout Britain but many were destroyed during the reformation. There are now less than 2000 crosses remaining, many incomplete.

Full Description

Remains of medieval wayside cross, comprising of fragment of shaft, socket stone and two steps in red sandstone. Steps considered post medieval and may not be in situ (1). Considered of possible early C16 date (2).

Standing cross at junction of 4 lanes in the centre of Woodhey Green. Cross has two steps supporting a massive single stone vlock with a fragment of the shaft in the socket. First step 1.9m x 1.95m of large ashlar sandstone blocks. Second step 1.3m square x 0.25m high of sandstone blocks. Base block 0.8m x0.85m x 0.52m high. Initials AH cut into east side. Shaft fragment 0.6m high. Structure is medieval and appears to be in its original location at the road junction. Proximity to Woodhey Hall suggests it was erected under the patronage of the family who lived there in the medieval period (3).
