Summary

The site of a watermill known to have been in existance in 1580. The mill is clearly depicted on historic maps dating from the nineteenth century. Although the mill building was demolished in the mid twentieth century and the mill pond has silted up, features, such as the mill dam, survive as earthworks or may be expected to survive as subsurface archaeological remains.

There are two watermill sites at Barthomley (see 2). The earliest documentary reference dates from 1580 (see 3).

'...An old store and half-timber mill now ruinous and last worked approximately 1900. The pool was dry but the dam remained when visited, but it is believed to have been bulldozed since. There is a photograph by E. M. Gardner taken in 1939, now in the National Building records…'

The map and award depict and record the mill, mill pond, mill house, garden and mill dale.

This map depicts the mill building located on the western side of the dam to the mill pond. The tail race is to the north and starts as two channels, possibly indicating two wheels. The mill house is to the immediate west of the mill and is located within a cutting on the valley side which may be the quarry for the mill dam. The northern half of the mill pond is depicted as marsh. The southern part has silted up entirely. The overflow leat is located on the eastern side of the mill pond. Barthomley mill is labelled ‘Flour’.

The mill is labelled as disused. The mill pond has silted up.
