Summary

Grade II listed cottage. Brick nogged timber frame with slate roof built in the 17th century. Close studded exterior (small narrow panels) Wood was in plentiful supply as a building material in Britain until the 17th century. It was therefore the most practical material for house building. Timber framed buildings consist of a wooden framework (usually oak) that was infilled to created solid walls. Infill material used included wattle and daub, lath and plaster, brick and weather board. Brick nogging, (brick infill) was often used in the 17th and 18th centuries to replace earlier wattle and daub or lath and plaster infill as it was longer lasting.

Full Description

Cottage, late C17. Brick nogged timber frame with slate roof. 2- storeys, four window bays. High sandstone plinth. Close studding (22 panels) with middle rail, short angle and tension braces. Three-light mid C19 cast-iron lattice windows. To rear framing is large with only 16 panels. North gable has projecting bressumer. Central brick stack. Interior has deeply bevelled beams and wide boarded doors (1).
