Full Description

Audlem Grammar School was founded and endowed in 1655 by Sir Ralph Bolton and Mr Thomas Gamull, Merchant Taylors. It is of red English garden wall bond brick with ashlar dressings and slate roof. Original portion is of two-storeys and four-bays. Ashlar plith, flush quoins and string course at first floor. Central doorway with ashlar surround flanked by four-light stone mullioned and transomed windows. Upper storey has similar mullioned windows in gabled half dormers. Interior now sub-divided but retains stone fireplace. Headmaster's house added in 1770, later extensions to school room. Now a nursing home (1). Detail records of the building and endowment of the school survive and have been analysed (2).
