The name Wardle is derived from the Old English weard and hyll, meaning watch-hill (see 2) - which implies an elevated place. There is a Castle Field on the 1839 tithe map for Wardle, but there is no other evidence for a castle. It is assumed that the name does not relate to a medieval stone-built castle, but instead to earthworks or a stone outcrop with the appearance of a ruined castle (see 5).
