There is reference in 1295 to Mill Brook. This may refer to Burley Mill, which is first mentioned in the 14th century. It was part of the lost settlement of Burley, which means a fortified place in an assart. An assart is an area cleared for agriculture.

The reference in 1295 is to a mill brook, which may or may not have referred to the Burley Mill on other references. The type of mill is otherwise unstated. Further references to Cholmondeley (Chelmundelegh) Mill in 1320 and "le Molyn de Eve" in 1397 (Cholmondeley Deeds) are associated by EPNS (see 2) with the windmill site (1348). Burdett (see 3) shows a watermill at approximately SJ532512. Bott gives the grid reference of SJ542506.

The earliest documentary reference to Burley dates from 1240. The earliest documentary reference to a mill dates from 1290. There are references to the four Burley Fields and the Burley Field dating from 1670 and 1734 respectively.
