Monument record 393/1 - Northwood's Farm

Summary

Moated site, greatly altered by the clearing out of two arms of moat and using the spoil to level the platform. The site possibly originates in the late 12th / 13th centuries and may have begun as a grange of Combermere Abbey. A Grange is an area of monastic land that lies outside the Abbey's main land holdings. They were usually farms and were run by the laymen of the monastic order or by hired labour. Seven seasons of excavation, covering around two thirds of what survived of the platform were carried out by Keele University. The excavation revealed a Hall built of earthbound posts, except in last phase when it was on cobble foundations. There was an oven within separate kitchen and lots of medieval pot from late 12th century onwards was found as well as the evidence to show the house had moved to its present site in the 18th century.
