Summary

Linear earthworks originally believed to be the remains of a medieval moat. Modern LIDAR survey indicates that these earthworks are more extensive than originally thought and may therefore be former field banks.

A square enclosure c.50-60 metres north-south / east-west. The enclosure appears to be defined by wide banks c.20m wide. The northern and southern banks appear fainter, possibly due the natural slope. The western boundary extends c.120 metres to the north and a further east-west aligned bank adjoins this close to the enclosure. Two short east-west banks adjoin the enclosures eastern side.

<6> See map for surveyor, c.1837-51, Cheshire Tithe Maps and Awards, EDT 76/2, c.1839 (Maps and Plans). SCH3266.

The north-south aligned banks correspond to field boundaries depicted on this map. The long north-south boundary also corresponds to the township boundary. Furthermore, two of the plots containing the earthworks are called stone field and gravel field.

<7> Various, Various, Oral communication to the HER, Edwards R, 01/03/2022 (Oral Communication). SCH2330.

Possibly field boundary earthworks. Field names may suggest quarrying at this location.
