Summary

Barton Farmhouse is a Grade II listed 17th century building. It has internal oak framing but the external walls were cased in brick in the late 18th century. It is two-storeys high plus attics with a steep grey slate roof. To the rear is a slate-roofed brick lean-to extension which probably dates to the 19th century. Above the back door one panel of the oak frame is exposed. Inside there is substantial oak framing and beams with an interesting mullioned window between the main block and rear extension. Wood was in plentiful supply as a building material in Britain until the 17th century. It was therefore the most practical material for house building. Timber framed buildings consist of a wooden framework (usually oak) that was infilled to create solid walls. Infill material used included wattle and daub, lath and plaster, brick and weather board. Brick nogging, (brick infill) was often used in the 17th and 18th centuries to replace earlier wattle and daub or lath and plaster infill as it was longer lasting.
