Summary

Middle Bronze Age palstave fragments found scattered in ploughsoil. Palstaves are a type of bronze axe made with flanges to hold the handle in place.There are ten fragments from at least three palstaves. All fractures appear to be ancient, suggesting that this find may represent the scrap hoard of a metal worker which has been disturbed by ploughing. Donated by the finder to Cheshire Museums Service.

Full Description

Middle Bronze Age palstave fragments found in ploughsoil up to 30cms deep and up to 2.5 metres apart. Ten fragments from at least three palstaves. Fragmentary and corroded condition makes precise identification of palstave types difficult. All fractures appear to be ancient, suggesting that this find may represent a founder's hoard which has been disturbed by ploughing. Found in April 1996 by metal detecting.
