Full Description
In 1882, during excavations for a sewer in Vicar's Lane, near St John's Church, a series of Roman finds were recovered (1). A 'number' of stones of Roman and medieval date, some with mouldings are reported, which included the base of a small altar, square with a moulding around its side 'about 15 inches square'. Only one small piece of the shafting was preserved, so it is unknown whether it had been inscribed. 'Some Roman coins, Samian ware, and horse shoes' were also reported (1).
