Summary

Salt works established in the 17th century by the Lawton family on the south(Church Lawton) side of the River. In 1778 new salt works were established on the Odd Rode side following the completion of the Trent and Mersey Canal. Lawton Salt Works was taken over by the Broughton family in about 1790 and Salt Union eventually took over the lease in 1888. Became Commercial Salt Co in c.1911 which merged with Palmer Mann in 1920's. Henry Seddon of Middlewich took over the freehold in about 1922. Works eventually closed following subsidence in 1926. Massive subsidence also occured in 1937. The site was landscaped in 1980 and is now a meadow. North of the river in Odd Rode there is also a "Wich House Field" and a "Rock Pit Field". There was a brief period of rock salt mining around 1780. But the Wich House Field could be a 17th century development. Wich is the Saxon name for a place of salt production or industrial activity; hence the many salt producing towns that end in "wich".
