Summary

A group of round barrows that crosses the parish boundaries of Goostrey, Twemlow and Swettenham. A total of six barrows have been identified. One of the barrows was totally excavated in 1987-88 revealing a primary burial pit with a broken collared urn and cremated bone. 4 unurned cremations were also found. Another of the mounds has been completely removed, possibly during landscaping the grounds of Jodrell Hall c.1899-1905. The four remaining barrows are Scheduled Monuments. Round barrows are a type of burial mound, particularly used in the Bronze age. Mounds of earth and stone were placed over a burial or cremation. A single barrow could be re-used for several later burials.
